Welcome Families!

I am very excited to be teaching First Grade this year at Fred C. Cook. Our first few weeks will be developing a strong classroom community and culture, learning our routines, and reviewing some key concepts. I will be meeting students on our first day on the school before the bell rings. There will be some notes coming home including the following: Letter to families I am looking forward to a fantastic year in first grade and am happy to partner with you in your child’s learning journey.

Have a Marvelous Monday!

Jim the Giant heard that we were learning about tadpoles and decided to return home from his trip to Florida. Jim just loves fish/sea creatures and everything that has to do with it…tadpoles/frogs included!

Our tadpole inquiry is still unfolding itself. Today we explored a frogs habitat. We watched videos, sang songs, read/looked at books and together consolidated our learning by recreating our own frog habitats.

We had a great day yesterday. Our students were able to experience many things.
A special thank you to all the parents who helped facilitate our trip and our students learning.

During our inquiry block, our students learned about the life cycle of a frog. Together we read books and watched a video (life cycle of a frog). Our students were encouraged to observe and pay close attention to detail. Our students then explored planned centres/provocations. Later we consolidated our learning, by sharing our discoveries.

During our literacy block, a small group of students went to the library and borrowed books on the life cycle of a frog. These students were interested in finding out what tadpoles eat. Together they discovered that tadpoles (when kept as a pet) enjoy eating lettus and baby spinach. These student then shared their learning with the whole class. During our second nutritional break, a few students saved lettus from their sandwiches. The lettus was later shared with our tadpoles.

Tomorrow we are hoping to record some observations of our tadpoles and hopefully create more “wonder” questions.

So many interesting things are happening in our class!
